His hair combed down hides
What others have believed to be lying eyes
And this moment of truth will hurt for life
Or will it?
The fear is apparent in his eyes
As the words "I love you," hesitantly fall from his lips
His head quickly falls to stare at the ground
Yet, the rebuff he had though he could foresee
Was not forthcoming

She gently reaches out a hand to lift his chin
And he raises his head to meet her eyes
Filled with joy and surprise
And from her lips comes the most joyous of replies,
"I know. I love you too."

His heart leaps into his throat as he is overcome with happiness
He embraces her and holds her close
Wishing time would simply freeze
He hopes that love will last
Unlike others of the past
And with time grow and be tempered
Like the iron passed through the flame

And the smile in her eyes
Makes everything all right.
